Writing Prompt – An Unexpected Gift

I’ve been really busy with work and travel and hobbies and pracitcal domestic matters lately. I feel like my mind is going a hundred miles an hour and sleep has been a bit evasive. This is all fine. I don’t mind. It’s nice to have the minutes, hours and days filled with worthwhile activities. However, when the sun goes down and its quiet, the cat is at my feet and I’m at peace, I think about the people I care about and in particular, about the ones I haven’t heard from lately. I miss my friends and family 6,000 miles away from me more acutely than ever when the sun is down and I’m alone at home.

It’s lovely that at the precise moment that I felt the most lonely and removed from my distant relations and chums that I got a series of text messages and emails with greetings and invitations. Today, out of the blue, I heard from three friends from various chapters in my life and I can’t help but feel the giddy appreciation that only comes from knowing for a day that you’re loved. Now I have to make sure I don’t take it for granted and make the effort in return.
