Writing Prompt: The Muse

Art means different things to different people. Some people love sculpture, others painting, pottery, architecture or drawing. Modern art is lost on me, but I love the intricacies of impressionism. I love that as a species, throughout our entire history, we’ve made things with our hands, the products of our imaginations. There are stories in everything we see.

Now, if I had to name my favourite works, I’ve have to say the works of Paul Delaroche, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John William Waterhouse, Johannes Vermeer and Jean Leon Gerome are up there. They tend to fall more into the realm of pre-Raphaelite and Romanticism, but they just hit me where it counts.

There is something about the colour and detail and the stories behind their subjects that fascinate me. My favourite Rossetti is “Persephone”, my Waterhouse is “La Belle Dame Sans Merci” and my favourite Delaroche is “La Jeune Martyre”.

Try this, pick your favourite work of art and describe it. What it looks like, shape, colour, and what it is you love about it.

Here’s one of mine:
